But when “A Day’s Work” is over, the people depicted in our 2006 Glimpse Calender enjoy “A Day’s Rest,” whether it be by playing backgammon, chatting with friends or embarking on a quiet sunset fishing trip. A Glance at the Winter Issue of Glimpse: Readjusting to the States
Chronicle of Higher Education, Dec. 6, 2005
Catching up again to the fast-paced American lifestyle is one of the hardest challenges for American students returning home from study abroad, according to surveys conducted by the travel magazine. Kerala Goodkin, the magazine's editor in chief, writes that Americans obsess over productivity and efficiency, and that such fixations have led to "on the go" eating mentalities, excessive sugar consumption, a reliance on cars, and poor health. That "hurried" lifestyle, she explains, is all the more difficult for students to adjust to after living in countries with more-relaxed outlooks.

Student-launched Web site and magazine provides inside look at studying abroad
Brown Daily Herald, Nov. 15, 2005
Learning to love fondue, discovering the best types of beer and making friends with locals are just some of the cultural information often overlooked when students are considering studying abroad. Read full article.

Glimpse on TV
May 22, 2005 — On Sunday, May 22, The Glimpse Foundation's Editor in Chief, Kerala Goodkin, was invited as a guest on The Truman Taylor Show, a weekly news program on ABC 6. Kerala discussed the worrisome disparity between the amount of power that the U.S. exerts over the rest of the world and the amount we know about the daily realities of life in other countries.

Utne Reviews the Fall 2004 Issue
Nov. 2004 — "Written mostly by university student and recent grads living abroad, Glimpse Quarterly reports on wide-ranging topics from around the world. Now in its third year, it's published by The Glimpse Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes global understanding. The Fall 2004 issue spotlights India but also includes writings about life in Australia, Guatemala, and Denmark."

Library Journal Reviews the Winter 2004 Issue
"Glimpse seeks to promote global understanding by providing readers, particularly younger ones, with a deeper, more well-informed perspective. Each issue spotlights a different part of the world -- the issue examined looks at China -- via essays, photos, and observations by Americans living abroad or foreigners living in America. The glossy paper, striking photography, maps and mid-size format all make for an attractive package. A strong addition to most collections."

Getting a Glimpse of different news
Providence Phoenix, June 27 - July 3, 2003
Most people, if they know anything about a foreign country, know it from reading the newspaper or watching TV news. But after living in southern France for six months, Nicholas Fitzhugh, 24, was astounded when he read about that region in American newspapers. "They just knew nothing about the actual country or the culture," he recalls. Read full article.

Magazine shows a 'Glimpse' of life abroad
Pawtucket Times
PAWTUCKET -- Tucked into the top floor of a faded brick mill building on Fountain Street is the headquarters of "Glimpse Magazine" -- a 2-year-old publication produced by a group of editors just out of college. "Glimpse" is still a small operation. Nicholas Fitzhugh, 24, serves as the magazine's publisher while Kerala Goodkin, 22, is editor-in chief. Despite the modest office, the two former Brown University students are running a magazine with a truly expansive mission -- publishing writings from dozens of students and other expatriates as they experience the ups and downs of living in foreign cultures. From Student Project to Nonprofit Business
George Street Journal, Sept. 12, 2002
PROVIDENCE - In June, three new Brown graduates moved operations for their fledgling foundation, called Glimpse, from a Brook Street rental to a 4,300-square-foot loft in Pawtucket. That same month, they also paid themselves for the first time in two years. It’s a far cry from the tiny apartment dining room where Glimpse was launched as an undergraduate project. The foundation’s stated mission is “to promote cross-cultural dialogue and education by connecting the people, places, and ideas of the world.” It plans to accomplish its mission through an online magazine of articles written by Americans – primarily college students – about living abroad, including a recent piece about a young woman’s experience in an Afghan refugee camp. Young CEO Looks To College Students To Build Cultural Bridges
Cape Cod Chronicle, August 22, 2002
CHATHAM - Nicholas Fitzhugh believes the need for cross-cultural understanding has never been greater, especially in the wake of Sept. 11. With the U.S. media continuing to do its usual superficial job following a brief spurt in international coverage, the recent Brown graduate and long-time Chatham summer resident thinks it's time for a different approach.

MHS grad's company making media waves
The Times Argus, August 5, 2002
MONTPELIER - Former Montpelier High School student Nick Fitzhugh is making waves in the high-powered media world with a start-up Internet company. He has attracted the interest and support of the BBC, The Associated Press, PBS' Frontline, National Geographic and Harper's with his online magazine that features the stories of college students living and studying abroad. The Glimpse Foundation and its Web site uses students like a band of roving reporters to write personal accounts of political and cultural events around the world. Read full article.

A Fresh Start-Up
The Providence Journal, May 2, 2002
PROVIDENCE - Nick Fitzhugh's bedroom has a secret life -- as a boardroom. Fitzhugh, a senior at Brown University, is running a nonprofit company -- The Glimpse Foundation -- from his off-campus apartment. Fitzhugh, 23, and his staff of seven raise money and organize the business from his bedroom. The company produces a magazine three times year, and updates a Web site regularly, which focuses on the issues facing students studying abroad and covers international events. "We've gone through periods where we worked half our waking hours on this," said Fitzhugh, who launched the company in 2000, as a junior. "For half of us this is our dream, it's the only thing we want to do after graduation." Read full article.

The Glimpse
International Relater, April 29, 2002
PROVIDENCE - "Bringing the World to Life" is the mission behind the Glimpse Foundation, a rapidly expanding non-profit organization made up of Brown University students. Concerned with a lack of intimacy in much of mainstream media, these energetic students have created Glimpse Magazine to report today's international news from the fresh perspective of students studying abroad. Because such students live as community members amongst coffee shop owners, taxi drivers, and other students to name just a few, they often are able to probe deeper into the stories behind the stories. These sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always enlightening perspectives are collected by Glimpse to provide a rare angle into the happenings of today's world.

Student-founded Internet mag to go national
Brown Daily Herald, April 25, 2002
PROVIDENCE - Glimpse, an Internet magazine founded by Brown students last year, is looking to hit the big time. Glimpse examines international issues and cultures from the perspective of students studying abroad. The National Geographic Society contributed $15,000 and nine computers to the Glimpse Foundation, the student-run non-profit that publishes the magazine, to fund an office in downtown Providence. Glimpse will also likely receive a $38,000 grant from National Geographic, said President and Publisher, Nick Fitzhugh ’02.

Undergrads Launch Glimpse Magazine
Brown Daily Herald, May 1, 2001
PROVIDENCE - Nick Fitzhugh '02 took a year off between high school and college to take his first trip abroad. He used that time to write articles about his experiences in France and Italy that were later published by the Providence Journal. As a fiction writer meeting and observing people, eager to probe the details and complexities of strangers' lives, Fitzhugh began to feel that something was missing in the way the mainstream media tended to cover international news.
