Glimpse Celebrates International Education Week with its First-Ever 'Share the World' Challenge

On Monday, Nov. 13, the 501(c)3 Glimpse Foundation will launch its first-ever "Share the World" challenge as part of its campaign to promote international education amongst America's younger generations. One lucky winner will receive a $250 travel voucher, courtesy of STA Travel. Ten runners-up will receive a free Rough Guides world music CD.

Glimpse's "Share the World" challenge aims to further Glimpse's charitable mission by spreading the word about Glimpse and its efforts to expose the daily realities of life in other countries, as seen through the eyes of students and other young adults. All participants are entered once to win the travel voucher, and with each friend or family member that they successfully refer, they receive an additional entry.

The raffle is being held in honor of International Education Week (Nov. 13-17), a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to recognize the global exchange environment between the United States and other countries.

Since the U.S. Senate dubbed 2006 "The Year of Study Abroad," Glimpse has emerged at the forefront of pioneering initiatives in the field of international education. Says Kathryn Fuller, former President and CEO of the World Wildlife Fund, "The Glimpse Foundation has an impressive and innovative approach to addressing the need for cross-cultural understanding among young adults in the United States. The Foundation's work focuses on building better leaders for tomorrow, leaders who are as familiar and sensitive as possible to the diversity our world has to offer and who seek to move forward through mutual understanding and learning."

In pursuit of its mission to promote cross-cultural understanding and exchange by providing print and electronic forums for sharing the experiences of young adults living and studying abroad, Glimpse publishes a website (GlimpseAbroad.org) and a print magazine (Glimpse Quarterly), which feature first-person narratives written by study abroad students and international volunteers.

Glimpse Quarterly is primarily distributed through colleges and universities across the country, with a current circulation of 15,000 and a projected readership of 20,000. It is also available in bookstores nationwide. Dr. Jane Edwards, Director of International Programs at Harvard University, dubs Glimpse Quarterly "the best publication dedicated to student experience abroad."

GlimpseAbroad.org, a gathering space for study abroad students and other young travelers, offers a database of over 550 articles from almost 100 countries, as well as "Ask the Expert" peer-to-peer communication features, a growing library of blog posts and a PDF guide series about living and studying abroad. The series addresses such topics as Culture Shock, Language Learning and American Identity Abroad, and is built on anecdotes, statistics and advice culled from hundreds of survey responses from study abroad students across the country.

The Glimpse Foundation was established by Brown University students in November 2001 and began full-time production in May 2002, with generous seed funds from the National Geographic Society. Glimpse uses its growing youth network to innovate platforms for creative nonfiction, informed discourse and intercultural exchange.
