Glimpse Foundation Receives $100,000 Grant from National Geographic

WASHINGTON, DC (July 3, 2007) -- The National Geographic Society has awarded a grant of $100,000 to The Glimpse Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes cross-cultural understanding among young people. The grant will help the small start-up nonprofit to enlarge its staff and expand its reach.

The foundation publishes Glimpse Quarterly magazine and a Web site, GlimpseAbroad.org, which both offer first-person, cultural-experience pieces written by study-abroad students and other young adult travelers. GlimpseAbroad.org serves as a gathering space for internationally minded college students and recent graduates, providing a database of nearly 500 articles from over 100 countries, as well as blogging services and social networking capabilities. With offerings such as in-depth study-abroad acclimatization guides, it has become a valuable resource for students in international study programs at nearly 800 universities and colleges around the United States.

"It is imperative today that young adults be savvy about the geography and cultures of the world," said National Geographic Society President and CEO John Fahey. "Through its innovative programs, The Glimpse Foundation is inspiring Generation Y to travel and share their experiences of living and working abroad, and we want to encourage their innovative and important work."

The Glimpse Foundation was established by Brown University students Nick Fitzhugh and Kerala Goodkin in November 2001 and began full-time operations in May 2002 with $15,000 in seed funding from National Geographic, among others. The foundation's mission is to foster cross-cultural understanding and exchange, particularly between the United States and the rest of the world, by providing forums for sharing the experiences of young adults living and studying abroad.

"We bootstrapped this operation right out of college," says Nick Fitzhugh, president and publisher of The Glimpse Foundation. "Now, with support from National Geographic, we finally have the chance to enlarge the Glimpse team, take full advantage of the market opportunities we've developed and really focus on making a significant impact."
